Grady - Always One Day Late

Christmas 2016 wasn’t the easiest. I had hoped we'd be announcing my pregnancy, but I had taken multiple negative tests. I had a fun plan for how I would announce, but was sad when I wasn’t able to execute it. A few days before actual Christmas Day I remember taking a test before Jacob and I headed to my cousin’s Christmas party. Negative. “I guess I can drink tonight,” I thought, trying to cheer myself up.

Christmas came and still no positive tests. I tried to go about Christmas as usual and enjoy the day with our families. I had some wine with Jacob’s family and a few beers at my parents’ house.

The next morning Jacob suggested we go for a run. For whatever reason, I felt as though I should take one last test before we went.

I remember holding the test over the trashcan when I noticed there were TWO pink lines, not the single line I had grown to hate. Jacob and I froze and stared at each other in silence. Surely, this was a mistake. In fact, we were so convinced it was a mistake that we immediately went to the store, purchased two more tests and took those. BUT, they still came back positive.

I went to the OBGYN where she confirmed. I was in fact pregnant! “I drank on Christmas,” I said with concern to my doctor. “Most babies are here because someone drank,” she laughed. “Just stop now and the baby will be fine.”

Once we knew for certain that this was in fact the real deal we decided to start sharing the news!

We told my parents first. I told them I had been shopping and I wanted to show them what I had found. I pulled out a new shirt for myself first, then another. My dad seemed uninterested. “I think you’ll both really like this next one,” I said. I pulled out a pair of baby overalls and slippers. They both froze. “You’re pregnant?!” my mom squealed!

Next, we told Jacob’s mom and dad. We acted as though we had “forgotten” one of their Christmas gifts. When they opened them, there were shirts stating “World’s Best Grandma” and “World’s Best Grandpa.” “About damn time,” they said in almost unison. (Jacob and I had only been married four months and had just had our wedding a little over a month before.)

On New Year’s Eve we gathered our friends for a picture. I set the timer on Jacob’s camera and right as it was about to flash I yelled, “We’re pregnant!” The girls cried! As a funny side note, our friend Rich was a little “toasty” and accidentally let it slip to Jacob that he and his wife were pretty sure they were pregnant as well!

We had fun sharing the news with our friends and family over the next few weeks. As we headed out the door to our honeymoon, we announced our pregnancy on social media. I enjoyed reading everyone’s comments to Jacob as he drove us to California.

It’s hard to believe it’s already been one year since we found out we were pregnant. We are so blessed to have our little man in our lives… even if he is always one day late.
