The Emotional Monk

So… I left off with Jacob and me walking back to the car hand in hand…

We headed towards the Hungry Monk taproom… only I couldn’t remember the actual name of it and kept referring to it as the Emotional Monk. Haha!

We had to take Derek’s Camaro so my friend Aimee and I got stuffed in the backseat while Jacob sat upfront and Derek drove. I text Jacob, “I want to kiss you.” Only problem was that Jacob dropped his phone and it landed at Aimee’s feet. She saw the text and said, “As soon as we get there, we’re going to the bathroom and talking!”

We did exactly that… “He’s been talking about you non-stop to Robyn!” Aimee said. I was sooooooooo giddy. “I really like him!” I said. “Are you going to actually kiss him?” Aimee asked. I sure wanted to.

We ended up having our first kiss in the “Emotional” Monk parking lot. We immediately made plans to see each other the next weekend.

We went to a Diamondback’s game with Julia, her coworkers and Derek. We had a blast but ended up deciding it was time to go on our first real date…

October 10, 2015 I drove up to the Valley after two of the craziest work days of my life. (My work had hosted a black-tie gala on Friday night and a ribbon cutting ceremony Saturday morning.) I was exhausted, but I took my time getting ready, wanting to look perfect. The wait till it being time to go meet Jacob seemed to drag on.

We met at BJ’s Brewery. I still remember what Jacob was wearing, khaki slacks and a blue collared button down. He opened the door for me and we sat down to eat. We talked for hours with no awkwardness. We shared our struggles of dating as a Christian, about our work, families, and dreams. I distinctly remember thinking, “If I spend a second more with him, I’m going to fall in love.”

After dinner we headed into the nearby theater. We were sitting there, not long into the movie, when we started hearing screaming. There was a rush of commotion. Someone yelled for a doctor. A lady yelled that she was a nurse and said to call 9-1-1. A teenager behind us had a major seizure. Soon, the lights came on and the asked for everyone to calmly exit the theater. As we walked out they handed us each two movie passes. The same movie was showing again 30 minutes later, so we went in and enjoyed the show. (If you’re wondering, we did hear that the boy was alright.) As the movie ended Jacob said, “I guess we’ll have to go out again and use our remaining free movie passes.” Sly Jacob, sly.

After the movie Jacob walked me out to my truck. “I don’t want to date anyone else he said.”

“I don’t either.” I replied.

I woke up the next morning and had a text from Jacob. (Waking up to texts from him was something I looked forward to every morning from then until we got married.) Eventually Jacob asked me to be his girlfriend. “Umm… I kinda thought I already was. I thought that is what that conversation last night meant.” He was relieved, “I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page.” Since then we’ve made clear communication a priority in our relationship.

Jacob and I dated for nine months, mostly long-distance, before he decided it was time to buy a ring and ask me to be his wife. But that’s another story, for another day…
